16. What are the implications of Noam Chomsky’s innatist perspective on second language acquisition?

Translating this perspective to the phenomenon of SLA, instruction in the language itself would effectively be unnecessary and therefore non-existent. It would not just be up to the students to sit in class and absorb passively what they are being taught; they would actually need to play a central part in the learning process. Learning from an innatist perspective would therefore rely on the students’ ability to think through for themselves the rules of the language they are receiving and are required to process as they engage in language learning. Immersion in the L2 would be fundamental. (East, 2021)
